This page contains information about items that can be found in the different areas of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. These items, unlike stashes for example, are simply located somewhere in a specific area, sometimes just in the open, sometimes contained within a wooden crate or a metal box.
Many containers - wooden crates and metal boxes specifically - contain random loot which means that sometimes you'll find something in them, other times you won't... and perhaps you may find different items when trying at different difficulty levels, different savegames, etc. I haven't established a true understanding of how it works yet, except that for some of these containers it just seems random. What affects it I cannot say at this point. But... the crates and boxes included in this page have been confirmed to produce loot at some point, however whether they will for you (or not) I guess depends on "luck". Not all these containers provide random loot, their contents are fixed so that you'll find the same every time you play through the game.
The page covers items that can be found in each area, and each section has a map that indicates the individual locations; each batch of items has a unique number so they can be identified on the map and in the list below.
Thanks to everyone at the forums for the help in collecting information about the locations of many items included on this page. If you know of items that aren't inlcuded below, feel free to contact me; please include a thorough description of where you can find the items as well as a description of what the items include; if you could also include a screenshot and possibly a screenshot of the PDA map that would be quite useful as well.

Although I really haven't had a chance to comb the entire area yet, it's pretty obvious that there are lots of loot to be found - especially in the form of artifacts that are scattered more or less all over the outside areas. At the north end of the large pool of water you can find a Battery artifact. |
On the first floor of the building in the center of the first installation you can find a bottle of vodka. Behind a fan in the wall you can find a Wrenched artifact. |
In the north-western corner of Streloks stash you should be able to find a Fireball artifact - however I have experienced that the artifact was out of reach, seemingly buried in the ground. |

At the Old Mill, just south of the railroad, you can find a Stone Flower artifact. It's inside a room with a Springboard anomaly just outside. Just inside the fence, at the forest, you can find the bodies of three research scientists. They carry stuff! | Whether you'll find the items found in the Sarcophagus of any use depend mainly of what kind of equipment you brought yourself. Notable items include a couple of Exoskeletons and some high-level artifacts such as a Night Star.At the back of a heavily radiated room you can find a wooden crate containing some medkits, some antirads, a F1 grenade and 90 5.56x45 mm AP rounds. |
On the bottom floor you can find a crate in the north-western corner; the crate contains some neat artifacts, including a Night Star artifact, a Soul artifact, and a Goldfish artifact. |
On top of some solid wooden crates you can find a metal box containing some bandages and 60 5.56x45 mm AP rounds. |
Up the stairs leading to the fabled door that needs the decoder (leading to Monolith Control) you'll find a Exoskeleton armor sitting on top of a metal container. |
Just before the decoder door you can find a metal box containing 30 5.56x45 mm AP rounds. |
Just inside Monolith Control you can find a metal box resting against the wall. Inside you can find .45ACP rounds, 5.56x45 mm AP rounds and a bandage or two. |
On the ground near a Gauss sniper you can find an Exoskeleton armor lying on the ground. |
Tucked away in a corner, behind some machinery, is a metal box. The box contains 5.56x45 mm SS109 rounds and possibly a bandage or two. |
This metal box contained 30 9x39 mm SP-6 rounds and 14 12x76 dart rounds when I examined it. |
Just north of the western grate you'll come upon a wooden crate; when smashes, it revealed a VOG-25 grenade. |
In a corner in the room furthest to the north-west you can find a Military Armored Suit along with a metal box containing some 12x76 dart rounds. |
In the second last room of Monolith Control you'll find a metal box resting beneath some stairs. The box contains 9x39 SP-6 rounds, .45ACP rounds and a bandage. | Like X16, the Wild Territory has a number of artifacts scattered all around. Most of these have not been included in the list below as they should be fairly obvious to the keen stalker - such as those situated in the Burner-infested tunnel near the exit to Yantar.Near the four snipers, tucked away in a corner, you can find a metal box containing some ammunition. Please notice that when you break the box, the ammo may fall through the floor to the ground below. |
At the end of the elevated area, where the four snipers are located, you can find a Stalker Suit. |
Near a Fruit Punch anomaly, inside a carport, you can find a Mica artifact. |
Inside a container near the downed chopper you can find a metal box; I personally managed to find a medkit and about 20 rounds of .45ACP ammunition in it. |
Inside the same caravan as the previous entry you can find a crate sitting in a corner. The crate appears to produce random loot - I personally managed only to find a single RGD-5 inside. |
In the underground tunnel, next to an Electro anomaly, you can find a Pellicle artifact. To safely get to it, jump onto the car in front of the anomaly and move past it onto the small ledge on the wall. If you stay on the ledge, you can nudge yourself towards the artifact without triggering the anomaly. |
Also in the underground tunnel, right behind the dead stalker named Freeman you can find a metal box inside a small container. The box contains the unique Big Ben pistol along with 60 9x39 mm SP-6 rounds. |
Inside a small building situated above two Whirligig anomalies you can find two crates and a metal box. Last time I checked I got an antirad and some 5.56x45 mm SS109 rounds out of them. |
The first time you're in Wild Territory you'll see a helicopter get shot down by a band of Mercs, who are attacking the scientists. Just north of the helicopter wreck you can find a dead merc carrying a RPG-7u along with one rocket. I believe the body will disappear once you leave the area so be sure to loot this guy on your first visit. |
If you visit Wild Territory after midnight you can find a Moonlight and possibly a Flash or Sparkler here; they are located inside a couple of Electro anomalies which makes them hazardous to pick up unless you've got the right protection. An alternative to breaching the anomalies is using grenades to blast the artifacts out of the anomalies. |
Inside the tunnel, right next to an Electro anomaly and a firebarrel you'll find the corpse of a lone stalker called Freeman. This is obviously an homage to the Half-Life games made by Valve. On Freeman you can find the Black Kite along with some .45ACP rounds and a bandage. | Many of the items in X10 appear to be random spawns and from what I have found myself so far, most of them are sadly fairly common. Still, as my motto seems to go, it's better than nothing. In the first room you'll come upon two crates containing random loot; when broken I managed to find a RGD-5 grenade, a F1-grenade, and a Stone Blood artifact. |
Another batch of crates containing random loot. When I broke them, I got a Jellyfish artifact. |
Behind a locked door - requiring the code 342089 - you can find four medkits, 150 5.56x45 mm AP rounds, and two F1-grenades. |
Inside a wooden crate, at the back of the room, I managed to find a single RGD-5 grenade. |
On a shelf you can find two metal boxes; one of them contains a scientific first aid kit and the other some 9x39 mm PAB-9 ammunition. |
These crates only seem to spawn random loot on rare occations, at least I've broken them many times without finding anything at all. However, last time I checked I found a Sparkler artifact. |
Yet another wooden crate containing random loot - last time I broke it, I got a F1 Grenade from it. |
Right next to the wall you can find a wooden crate that contains random loot; I personally managed to find a Slime artifact and a RGD-5 grenade last time I checked. |
More random loot can be found in a metal box on a shelf. I managed to find two scientific first ait kits and 53 5.45x39 mm BP rounds. |
Believe it or not, here is another wooden crate with random loot. Last time I checked I got a single RGD-5 grenade out of it. |
The excitement just wont end - here is another wooden crate providing random loot. I personally managed to find a M203 grenade during my last playthrough. | The X16 lab has some nice goodies in it, such as 9x39 mm ammunition along with scientific first aid kits, and a few other items - most notably a Berill-5M Armored Suit. Many of the rooms and corridors in X16 has artifacts lying on the ground - primarily Droplets and Fireball artfacts; locations of these has not been included in the list since they are plentiful and scattered more or less all over the lab, although dominant in the large, circular room. One of the crates here has a F1-grenade in it, and another crate contains 60 9x39 mm SP-6 rounds. |
To the north of the previous crates you'll come upon a room with a number of shelves in it. In the north-eastern corner you can find some boxes containing 5.45x39 mm rounds, 5.45x39 mm BP rounds, some bandages and a scientific first aid kit. |
In the south-western corner of the same room as above, you can find more shelves with more metal boxes on them. I only managed to find a single scientific first aid kit, but that is still better than nothing I guess. |
Next to the stairs going from the second to the third level in the large, circular room (with the deactivation mechanism in it) you can find a Berill-5M Armored Suit; nearby, inside a wooden crate, you can find a SSP-99 Ecologist suit. |
Inside the room with the controller you can find two crates inside one of the "boothes". The crate furthest away contains a F1-grenade. |
Just beyond the body of Ghost you'll find a "booth" with two wooden crates inside. One of the crates contains a scientific first aid kit. |
After you have dropped down the hole close to Ghost you'll come upon three metal boxes. Inside you can find 150 9x39 mm SP-6 rounds, some scientific first aid kits, and some bandages. |
In south-eastern corner of the "final" room (with the Controller) you can find a number of shower booths and a single toilet. Inside the toilet tank you can find a Tunder S14; to acquire it you may have to jump on top of the toilet booth door. | Not only does the X18 lab has some decent items scattered about, you are also likely to find a random number of artifacts, mainly Droplets and Fireball.Down a short set of stairs leading to a highly radiated area you can find a Wrenched artifact. Next (and beneath) the stairs you can find two wooden crates that may contain some random loot - last time I checked I managed to find a Gravi artifact in one of them. |
In the corner of a room, close to a Fruit Punch anomaly you can find a Slug artifact. |
In the opposite corner of the previous area you can find two antirads on the floor, behind a radioactive tube. |
Inside the room with the "floating burner anomaly" (or whatever it is) you can find a large number of wooden crates. I am not sure if they all produce random loot since I only managed to find a single Meat Chunk artifact the last time I went there. But I guess that is better than nothing in any case. |
Next to the small alcove with the scientist carrying the first door code you'll find a small toilet; in the sink you can find two antirads and a used toothbrush. Actually, just two antirads. |
Inside a blue box you can find 60 5.45x39 mm BP rounds, a medkit, two bandages and two antirads. |
Inside this small room you can find three metal boxes and a blue box. The blue box contains two bottles of vodka, a sausage and a loaf of bread along with 2 RGD-5 grenades. In the metal boxes I found some more RGD-5 grenades - however this appears to be random loot. |
On the body of the second scientist carrying a door code you can find a IL 86 assault rifle, a Walker P9m pistol, and a few other items. |
Inside the cupboards you can find three scientific first aid kits, five bandages, two antirads, and 120 5.45x39 mm rounds. You can also find two metal boxes inside one of the cupboards, and another one on top of it. The first two contains another 120 rounds of 5.45x39 ammunition and some 9x18 mm rounds. The third box contains two or three RGD-5 grenades. |
Towards the back of the large room with the Pseudogiant in it, you can find some skeletal remains on the floor with a loaded RPG-7u nearby. |
Inside two of the lockers in this room you can find two metal boxes; they appear to contain random loot as I often don't find anything at all - but last time I checked, I did mange to find a bandage and an antirad. | Although Yantar is one of the areas you'll access later in the game, it doesn't really have that many interesting items to offer.Near the mobile lab you'll come upon an old truck; in the back of the truck you can find a Wind of Freedom suit. |
At the southern side of the mobile lab you'll see a ladder going up. On top of the lab you can find three wooden crates containing some random loot. The last time I checked, I found only a RGD-5 grenade. |
Right next to the body of Vasiliev, you'll find two metal boxes. They contain a scientific medkit, an antirad and some 9x39 mm SP-5 rounds. |
West of the mobile lab, inside of the walls, you can find an open container. Inside the container are two wooden crates - when I smashed then I managed to find both a Jellyfish artifact and a Gravi artifact; these appear to be random spawns, though. |
Just south of the mobile lab is a construction resembling some kind of transportation container. It has some red barrels along with a wooden crate inside of it. The wooden crate contains some random loot - the first time I searched it I was unlucky and found nothing, but the second time I found a RGD-5 grenade and a VOG-25R grenade. |
Inside a building at the X16 compound, you can find a metal box sitting on a workbench. The box contains some medical supplies, specifically medkits and bandages. |
Inside the same building as the previous entry you'll find three wooden crates containing random loot. I managed only to find a single VOG-25R grenade. |
Just south-west of the building that has the entrance to X16 in it you can find a small building (or "shed"). Inside you can find some crates and a metal box, along with a Stalker suit. I only managed to find a single scientific first aid kit inside the metal box. |
At the top of the stairs inside the building with the entrance to X16 in it you can find a Goldfish artifact. |
Last time I went here I found the Army First Aid Kit inside a metal box. I'm fairly sure that prior to version 1.0004 the medkit is just lying on the floor - slightly out of reach of the dead stalker. |
Inside a small "shed" you can find two metal boxes along with a red barrel. If you break the metal boxes you'll find 3 scientific first aid kits, a bandage, an antirad, and 57 rounds of 5.45x39 mm BP ammunition. If you break the red barrel you'll just get a headache. |
A metal box containing some random loot - I personally found two scientific medkits along with 52 rounds of 5.45x39 mm ammunition. |
Near the entrance to X16 you can find a dead soldier, Sergeant Gurevich, on the ground. He's carrying some ordinary items such as an Akm-74/2, ammunition, and a bandage - but also the unique Healing Beril armor. The latter is not only a decent armor in itself, but it's also required for a mission provided by Lukash of the Freedom faction. |
A metal box sits on top of some sandbags here. It contains random loot - once I managed only to find a single antirad, but in a different game I managed to get 21 7.62x54R 7N14 rounds. |
Although I'ved tried to break these many times, I've rarely found anything... however, last time I checked I did manage to find some 5.56x45 mm SS109 rounds and 5.56x45 mm AP rounds. |
